Gran Canaria Attractions and things to do on Gran Canaria

The Canary island of Gran Canaria is roughly circular; it has an average diameter of just over 30 miles and raises to the 6,400-ft Pico de las Nieves at its centre. Gran Canaria lies around 120 miles off the west coast of Africa and offers all year sunshine – especially in the south of the Island. The landscape is varied with barren cliffs cut by deep gorges, mountains, desert scenery and tropical valleys.

The capital is Las Palmas and has a major port and airport which connects to the south of island via motorway. The main resort is Playa del Ingles which translated means “the Englishman’s beach” and during the peak season the name is 100% correct. The Brits just love it and keep coming back for more sun, sand and San Miguel’s. It has a wide sandy beach which runs from San Agustin in the north to Maspalomas in the south. Playa del Ingles offers tourist everything they could ever possibly need for a lively holiday including a very busy nightlife, bars, restaurants and ample shops. For those holidaymakers looking for a more sedate experience should opt for either Puerto Morgan or Arguineguin which are both old charming fishing villages.

Shopping

Shopping opportunities in Gran Canaria are plentiful and range from local markets and handicrafts, to large shopping centers containing many popular fashion boutiques. Gran Canaria's markets are often the best places to find genuine bargains and inexpensive shopping, with many markets in Gran Canaria offering a good selection of gift ideas, together with tasty produce, hot snacks and local specialities. Shopping in Gran Canaria begins from any time between 09:00 to 10:00, Monday to Saturday, with the majority of shops closing during the hot afternoon for a traditional Spanish siesta.

Festivals

Amongst the most popular festivals in Gran Canaria, both the February carnivals and Easter Holy Week celebrations are known for their colourful parades. Other popular festivals and events in Gran Canaria include the Corpus Christi festivities and Gran Canaria Music Festival each June, the International Jazz Festival in July, and Gran Canaria's International Kite Festival in November - which lasts for three days and attracts large crowds.

Head to the beach

The delightful island of Gran Canaria has over 150 sandy beaches, ranging from large popular beaches where numerous water sports are available, including windsurfing, scuba diving, fishing and boating, to small secluded beaches where visitors can just relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Gran Canaria is also very popular with naturists, with the long stretches of quiet sandy beaches making Gran Canaria the perfect location for an all-over tan.
